Felt Food – Part One
I’ve finally started the mission of making felt food for my little girl. I had to as we received this wonderful package from my parents that contained these little stainless steel cooking pots and pans and a set of utensils to go with them. (These are from Ikea’s Duktig range for kids 4 Piece cooking set + kitchen utensil set).
I’ve looked at getting her some plastic play food, but they were either too expensive or not durable enough. Then I looked at the wooden options. They were really cool, but they were too expensive as well.
Cardboard House(s)
My little girl wanted to do some craft.
I was out of ideas, and the Usborne Books has been returned to the library.
Then, she told me she wanted to make a house.
A house? I thought about the options:
- We could build a house with blocks, but technically speaking, that is “play” not crafts.
- We could make a house with the cushions and the chairs, but that is “play”, too.
Hmmm… if I had a tissue box, but we seldom use tissues in this household.
Some rummaging around the house later, I emerged with a handful of colourful A4 sized corrugated card.
Surely one can fashion a house out of this.
Here are the steps I took:
More Bags
I think I went a bit overboard.
But they are destined for new homes. My little one’s friends are going to be very happy.
Next project – the messenger bag.
The New Bags
This is the bag I have been using for the last 2 and a bit years.
It was given to us when our little girl was born – to be used first as a nappy bag, and then later on as a kindy/school bag.
I decided that I should stop using it as a “nappy bag”. Problem was my old bag was just too small – long gone are the days of just having the wallet, the phone and the keys in the handbag.
So after some net surfing, I found this blog called ikatbag. Lier (the owner of the blog) has a wonderful pattern/tutorial on how to make a tote bag. It looked easy enough to attempt. So after some canvas shopping, the sewing machine had a workout (I made lots of mistakes so had to unpick a lot), and a little one the next day (I decided to make one for my daughter too).
The mini bag is so cute that I’m going to make another one just for my wallet, phone and keys for when I don’t have to lug toddler essentials around.
The New “Not Invisible” Cloak
I was rooting around in one of the boxes in the garage and found this shiny piece of red fabric. There is a story to how I came to own this fabric, but that comes later.
I thought to myself, “A cloak for my little girl. She can pretend she is a princess or a queen”. A fitting end to the story of this fabric that I have kept all these years.
What you need:
Double Cheese Muffins
There is something about the smell of baking which fills the home and your being with happiness.
I needed to use up some leftover cheeses I had in the fridge. And muffins take the least effort and time to make, so this is what I did to make these mouth-watering pieces of cheesy goodness …. YUM!
- Grate 2 1/4 C of Tasty / sharp cheddar cheese into a big bowl
- Grate about 120g of feta into same bowl
- Add 1 1/2 C of SR Flour, 1t chilli powder, 1T sugar, 1/2t salt to the cheeses and mix well
- Beat 1 egg & 1 C of milk together, add to the cheese mixture
- Mix together, but don’t over-mix
- Divide the mixture into a buttered non-stick muffin pan
- Add more grated cheese on top (if you like)
- Fan bake at 180 C till golden and cooked through
(Makes 6 large mufffins)
I think I will try adding a bit of blue cheese next time, maybe parmesan too.
Oh… some spring onions would be nice too.
Usborne Craft Books
I love craft. But when it comes to things to make with a two-year-old, my brain draws a blank.
Thankfully, our local library has books like these for loan.
Bit hard to see in the picture, the books are:
The Shirred Dress
It was 2 am on Sunday the 24th of January.
I was shirring the bodice of a dress for my little girl for the 3rd time. I am thinking, “One day, I’m going to tell her what I went through to make her this dress and she will not believe me”.
So, a bit of documentation is in order.
